KUALA LUMPUR: Citi Malaysia has raised over RM280,000 via its annual Global Community Day to support underprivileged communities during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The banking group said the event, in its 16th year, was themed Global Community Day Reimagined: Giving Back Together.

Citi Malaysia chief executive officer Usman Ahmed said the Global Community Day was Citi’s annual community outreach, demonstrating the best of its volunteer efforts that impact society through collaboration with various community stakeholders.

“Despite the Covid-19 pandemic and movement restrictions within the country, Citi Malaysia volunteers stepped up to support our communities, addressing a diverse range of needs including food insecurity and the building of more resilient communities amongst the urban poor.

“Together, Citi Malaysia has raised more than RM280,000 which will alleviate the hardships and burden faced by our communities in need, through the 10 NGOs we have supported this year,” he said in a statement.

Citi said this year’s event saw more than 2,200 Citi Malaysia volunteers raise over RM180,000 through various virtual community initiatives, in support of 10 non-governmental organisations (NGO) who were beneficiaries of this year’s Global Community Day.

In addition to this amount, Citi Malaysia has contributed RM100,000 to the 10 NGO beneficiaries who will each receive RM10,000.

The NGOs supported were EPIC Homes, Free Food Society, Make-A-Wish Malaysia, Malaysian Red Crescent Society, Pasarkita, PAWS Animal Welfare Society, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Insan Penyayang Pulau Pinang, Purple Lily Kuching, Rainbow of Love and Yayasan Chow Kit.
