Umno today vowed to reclaim all parliamentary and state seats lost due to its lawmakers defecting to Bersatu.
The pledge was made by Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan (photo, above) at the Umno Annual General Assembly 2020.
"All the seats where (our representatives) defected, for sure we will reclaim," he said when reading out the secretary-general's report.
Umno, which won 54 parliamentary seats in the 2018 general election, saw 15 MPs defecting to Bersatu in the period that followed.
The party's delegates are expected to debate and decide in the AGM about Umno's decision to sever ties with Bersatu.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, who had insisted that PAS would remain with Perikatan Nasional and Muafakat Nasional, is present at the AGM with this deputy, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
Pointing his gun at Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's administration, Ahmad said the Perikatan Nasional government is the most unstable government in the world.
"For the first time, politics in this country is very unstable. This government is the most unstable in the whole world.
"The leadership has to count the support of the members of parliament almost daily for fear that they (the MPs) will withdraw their support," he joked.
Ahmad also announced that Umno's membership totalled 3.36 million and proudly declared that the Malay-based party remains the country's biggest political party.
He said the party currently has 21,883 branches.
Ahmad also said Umno will turn itself into an active cyber-trooper in the GE15 to battle any fake news hurled at the party.
"Umno should be active in the social media to fight any fake news and (help) spread positive news about the party," he said.
"We, as Umno members, must act as cyber-troopers in the next general election as social media will take the lead (in reporting) as compared with the traditional media," added Ahmad.
The two-day Umno AGM was for 2020, which was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Umno is expected to hold its AGM for 2021 later this year, which is expected to see party elections.
